PARE DOWN YOUR PHOTOS, FILES AND EMAILS

A significant amount of storage space is wasted on superfluous files: screenshots, newsletters, unused apps. About 30 to 40 percent of images are duplicates.

Going through your images during downtime (maybe in a waiting room or departure lounge) and deleting all except your favourite pictures. That means deleting any blurry pictures, shots where someone’s blinking, memes and screenshots you’ve already shared, or angles that aren’t your favourite.

Paring down emails when you have decades of correspondence you could potentially access is tricky. For business it is good to have an active deletion policy.  For instance do not keep financial email for longer than 7 years i.e. deleted emails as soon as they are no longer needed legally.  Search “before: DATE” in Gmail, to pull up all emails from before a certain date and batch delete. Want to save emails from your certain people? Search “from:” or “to:” and their email addresses and archive those emails to another label.

To give yourself more storage space, sort your emails by attachment size and delete any large attachments taking up valuable megabytes.

Periodically give yourself a digital storage audit, maybe once or twice a year, take a look at what you’re choosing to hold on to and decide whether you really need it.  As a business any information you keep might have to be provided when requested during legal cases.  If you have an active deletion policy it will save you a great deal of time and money if you know the information does not exist.
